REM - Man O The Moon

February 2045, what is this amazing song dad??!!

I heard this first when I was maybe 8 or 9 years old - possibly in the backseat of the car on the Second Narrows in Vancouver. "...They put a man on the moon.." I always thought it was a funny sort of thing to say in a song. Later in University, I looked up this song and found the deep emotional scenery that was R.E.M. And got introduced to the antics and stunts of a Mr. Andrew Kaufman ("Tank You Veddy Much.") . A lot of this song is about what's real, what's not - but more importantly, how magical a myth or rumor can be. It's a somewhat frightening notion to put in a song. I'm listening to it now in the post-Truth society and it's ringing truer than ever. And yet the mandolin, classic guitar and twang from Stipe and company remind me of a hopeful attitude. Almost as if encouraging people to take note of human history, accomplishments and weave them together like R.E.M. did.

I miss Andy.

Never got Andy Kaufman, and all these years later I think I was right--he was a empty hateful meaningless little blip of a 'comedian' appealing only to a grandiose sliver of bored performers that for a moment thought that anxiety and anger were the same experience as humor. News flash, uncomfortable tittering isn't the same thing as actual laughter. There is a residual cohort of 'comedians' that continue to carry on his legacy--but no one but the fantastically grandiose bothers to listen, or thinks they are funny; but there are still these miscreants soldier on. Great song though, and Andy, as much as I dislike him, and think he was ultimately empty, was a profound artist.

I’m so grateful to have been able to grow up knowing Andy Kaufman and the outrageous things he did. Even in the hardest of times he always made me smile. Thinking of him even today so many years later it brings a tear to my eye. Thank you Andy, I’ll always love you and never forget you.

Strange for me from France, 28 years later. I knew that the remembers would come much later... As a former business school student, I went to OSU, Colombus OH. for the spring quarter, it was, as for many of us, the best part of our lives ! :-) We were about 80 frenches among the 43.000 students on the campus. We were young and "naive" about life of course. I was in love with my french girlfriend - the real love of my life, the first - on the campus, we started our first jobs in 1992 both in Paris, we splet 1 year later and listening to this song makes me remember these beautyfull days. Years have passed, I married much later, have 2 lovely kids, I'm now divorced, I have MS for more than 20 years and can't work anymore but thank's again REM and the movie "Man on the Moon" for these lovely souvenirs ! With love from France. PS : TRUMP is an assholle and verry dangerous to... ! ;-)

For anyone trained in classical music, this song has much of interest (as well as being beautiful). The verses are in Mode V (e.g. B flat to B flat with E natura lin the middle), while the chorus is more conventionally Mode VI, with REM's usual insertion of minor chords frequently. The song ends with a sudden drop to the relative minor (G). REM was adventurous and consistent in their songs. :)
