This masterpiece was played as a prelude in my mother's funeral last autumn by my choir leader.. It's such a beautiful song.

How does one possibly hold back the tears while listening to this? I am 66 years of age and yet still I weep, always, when I hear this soulful and wondrous masterpiece. What is it about music that moves us so? Is there something unique in our nature that compels our souls to heaven when we hear angels play such bliss? I hope so.

This was played at my mother's funeral in the beginning I'm so happy I chose it. I know she would have been. Ave Maria was played at the end.

This music moves me so deeply emotionally like no other music ever has. Such powerful mystical ascending-descending bass lines, pulsating accompaniment, and soaring melody. Such a mystery as to why. Almost afraid to feel such emotions. Beyond words.

Imagine hearing both this piece and Mascagni's Cavalleria Intermezzo at a dearly loved one's funeral.......forever tears.

All versions inferior to the pure organ piece, imo.

Out of all the classical pieces I listen to, no other brings me to tears and overwhelmes me like this. I blub like a baby, in the best possible way.

And to think this was written, more or less, as an ode to the shade of a tree. Xerxes was a despot who made every whim into a law. There was a tree on his grounds that he decided needed decorated so he had it decorated with gold ornaments. He also assigned a perpetual military guard to protect his tree. The large is about the comfort obtained in the golden shade. Because of the religious music Handle had been writing, the Largo took on a religious "flavor" outside the opera. It has a beauty beyond itself and seems to speak to the eternity of the human soul.
