From what I've heard the original purpose behind why this song was written was for when a queen was forced to give up her crown. If I am wrong on this feel free to correct me.

It may have been inspired by the possible model of the Beethoven's funeral march "Marcia funebre sulla morte d'un Eroe" of his piano sonata in A flat Major, op. 26 (a favourite teaching piece of Chopin).
