Nice to see the comments negating everything the critics said about this album. I wasn't there, so I never could figure out what the critics were talking about. This album is a masterpiece. Same with The Hollies doing Dylan album. People get their panties in a wad over some silly shit. Does it jam? That's all that matters. We're all so blinded by our biases, we can't see straight. ;)
oh hey sam
Dilla vibes
I'm baffled by some of the comments. This is a primo sublime jam right here. :)
It was considered "'corny"' for it's time but the musicianship on here is beyond cool.Superb sax solo from Bud Shank..has that Stan Getz feel.Joe or Wes , Howard Roberts etc can make the most bland pop song come alive.Pass said in an interview in 1974 "'Guitar"' magazine; "'There's a LOT of jazz within rock "'.
In 1977 I was browsing at a record shop ( Rays Jazz, London) and Joe was in the next aisle looking for this record amongst other early ones. I recall the counter clerk gave Joe a hard time.My father & myself spoke to him and he knew a friend of my dads called Cedric West. Joe was a nice guy. He was playing Ronnie Scotts Club that week.
'quite swing it for a white guy as well as Joe on guitar'He could swing it better than ANYBODY on guitar, white or black. Please leave your race comments elsewhere.
Ok, I'm a self-admitted jazz snob-- So here is my jazz-snob comment of the day: Ever wonder why jazz cats can easily adopt rock/pop/etc. tunes... But not vice-versa? Hmmmmm??? LOL
Because jazz fans want to make money, and rock musicians already have it?
Mas que excelente¡¡¡¡,... que buen jazz¡¡¡
Am I the only one here because I'm surfing on reddit/r/gentlementboners?
Musicianship means you can interpret a song anyway you wish to.Never mind about what the purists may think.
I remember listening to this around 1968 0r so and everybody laughing and thinking what a shame it was that great players were reduced to...etc. But I have to say that it sounds waayyy better than I remember it. Funny how that is. I see a lot of work in the arrangement in order to make it "jazzy" as well as the high calibre of the other musicians. haha the laugh was on me.
This album has some of Joe's best bop solos, especially over big band charts. Just happens to have been formed from Stone's songs. He doesn't change his style one bit.
@fecto3210 it is genius
@davemacleod Good point but even bad Joe Pass is better than some of the stuff being passed off as the latest flavor of the month that's over by quarter to twelve midnight, IMHO... No one could quite swing it for a white guy as well as Joe on guitar--even as hobbled as he may very well be here with this borderline MUZAK arrangement--yet, didn't Wes Montgomery embarrass us with some even more horrific Beatles pop covers smothered in orchestral strings?
@davemacleod Oh, you feel so smart copypasting posh reviews into YT comments, now don't you? What a loser...
Incredibly kool version of this tune!
Da "Noi" "questa" la cantava Caterina Caselli........Poi ci lamentiamo......
This album is the perfect example of how you can combine two things you love and end up with something disgusting. The aural equivalent of onion ring flavoured ice cream.
Sound Providers.. :)Good song
It got alot of bad publicity but i simply LOVE this album!Contains some of Joe's nicest & bluesiest playing.
