"Lullaby" was written for Elliott Hayes's play "Blake - Innocence and Experience" performed in 1983 at the Stratford Festival.The music was composed and performed for Elliott's play "Blake" by Loreena McKennitt.Actor Douglas Campbell who starred in Hayes' play "Blake" performs the spoken lyrics in this song.

A beautiful, devoted Mother crouches over the wickered and linened cradle of her Child to comfort that babe in minor distress from thundered elements, she sings, soothes and caresses her child to peace and maternal love. Also, I FINALLY got to see her live last year. For the past 20 years, every time she's played in LA, I've been out of town, busy, or broke. And then I saw she had this two-night engagement and I was broke AGAIN and my mom was like, "NO. This is a bucket list thing for you. Happy early birthday, here's two tickets." And WOW. It wasn't a concert. It was a spiritual experience. She doesn't AGE. And her voice sounds just as beautiful and pure and exquisite live as it does recorded.

Me, the first time I listened to this song, maybe...15 years ago: "OMG THUNDER OUTSIDE no wait, I've got the volume on my stereo turned up too high...wow, this is so amazing beautiful. Of course, it's Loreena, EVERYTHING she does is beautiful...ooo I love it when she starts stacking harmonies, cuz I get to sing along and harmonize too... Wait. What. What is this guy -- why is -- ...WTF is this poem. I AM LEGIT TERRIFIED RIGHT NOW. ...... I'm going to listen to this again. Five times in a row."

First time I ever heard this, I had the TV on silent, and it was showing footage of the Bosnian War during the soliloquy, with Blake's words as biting as they were two centuries earlier.

A lullaby, something to soothe children, and Blake's words which speak of all the corruption and evil that people inflict on one another are an absolutely chilling combination. And yet, I feel hopeful as the music rises and soars after the poem finishes. It seems to suggest that yes, we all come to recognize wickedness and the awful sadness it brings, but as keepers of our fellow human beings, we all have the responsibilities and abilities to make this world a better place.
