In my 2010-11 school year I was in 3rd grade. My school had this annual event where classes would learn a song and then we would go out to the sports field and sing for our parents, and this event was always full. So our piece of music was “Umbrella” by Rhianna, and since she was one of the most popular artists at the time everyone was excited. However, things changed and our song was switched to “You’re my best friend” By Queen. Everyone hated it, we had no clue who Queen were. After a couple weeks, we had already learned the song. But people had changed their minds, they loved this song and so did I. I remember going to my grandparents house and since they weren’t the wealthiest people, their computer was pretty old. But I watched this music video and I was furious at the fact that I had no idea what was going on. Sure I saw a few faces and candles but that’s it.... So we sung in front of our entire community (100+ people at the least) and they loved us. This was my first time listening to a Queen song other than “We will Rock You” “We are the Champions” etc (the chant type music, and even I didn’t know Queen wrote those songs 😕) 2 years later I was in the 5th grade choir and my teacher really loved rock music and that’s all we sang. Artists like the “The Beach Boys” “Queen” “The Beatles” “Guns N’ Roses”, etc. We even sang Bohemian Rhapsody in 5th grade with the upperclass men!! I loved this genre of music too however I never listened to it frequently and the only time I would was when I was in that class. I never really thanked my teacher for introducing me to Rock, but he did us proud and kept the legacy going. Thank you Mr. Grimes if you ever read this which I doubt....
