If anything i think this song is about drug addiction. “Our veins are busy” probably the drug shooting up their veins. “Our teeth and lungs are lined with the scum of it” probably from smoking, your teeth and your lungs will get most of the damage. Hence the word “sedated”, the effect of being high on drugs. “Lord we should quit but we love it too much”. The struggle of getting out of something you’re addicted to is almost close to impossible. “We’re nursing a poison that never stung.” They are letting this drugs, this poison that kills themslowly control their lives. “We are deaf, we are numb” probably from the effects, they dont function normally anymore. “free and young and we can feel none of it” they should be living the time of their lives but they don’t feel that way anymore because they are hooked on something that is dangerous. The girl she was probably talking about, “darlin', don't you, stand there watching, won't you come and save me from it.Darlin', don't you, join in, you're supposed todrag me away from it" damn all I could think of is Jesse and Jane from Breaking Bad. Its amazing how someone who has never experienced being addicted to drugs could come up with a song like this.
